The Ellen Noel Art Museum Capital Expansion Project Mentors UTPB STEM Academy Engineering Students

Odessa, Texas/May 15, 2024-The Ellen Noel Art Museum hosted the Engineering Students of the STEM academy at the University of Texas Permian Basin. The students did a walkthrough of the facilities at the Ellen Noel Art Museum and interacted with representatives of Parkhill and Lee Lewis Construction.

Parkhill is a multidisciplinary firm that provides comprehensive architectural and engineering design services for government, commercial and intuitional projects.

The museum capital expansion project provided another opportunity for the Ellen Noël Art Museum to support education in the community.

A Scandanavian Viking Traveled to Texas to Do Storytime

Odessa, Texas/April 11, 2024-The Ector County Library Hosted Kid’s Storytime featuring Dr. Jan Gustafsson, associated professor of Latin American studies at the University of Copenhagen. The Kid’s Storytime event was sponsored by a grant provided by the TEGNA Foundation.

 The Latin American series is an activity organized every semester by The University of Texas Permian Basin. Authors are invited to the come to the Permian Basin to discuss issues affecting Latin America and the U.S.

5th Annual University of Texas Permian Basin Kite Fest

Odessa, Texas/April 16, 2017-UT Permian Basin’s Student Government Association hosted the 5th Annual Kite Fest on Saturday, April 15th. Families came out to the UTPB Park bringing different types of kites, those who did not have a kite got one form UTPB.

Several elaborate and colorful kites were flown over the UTPB Park creating an awesome, fun time for children and parents.

The UTPB Kite Fest hosted approximately 400 visitors and kite flyers. Families enjoyed free snacks and other concessions by sponsors and UTPB.

First 5 Permian Basin Roll and Read 2023 at Freedom Park in Odessa

Odessa, Texas/April 2, 2023-First 5 Permian Basin held the annual Roll & Read 2023 event on Saturday, April 1st,.at Freedom Park next to the Family YMCA in Odessa. The free family fun event included booths with activities and reading stations.

Parents brought their kids with their bikes, skates and strollers. Free books were available to families.

The Education Foundation of Odessa, Ector County ISD, Complex Community Credit Union, Harmony Home and other businesses and non-profits were at the family fun event promoting literacy.

Criminal Justice Advisory Council Holds Annual Meeting with Permian Basin/West Texas Law Enforcement

Odessa, Texas/March 28, 2923-The Criminal Justice Advisory Council held their annual meeting on Monday, March 27th, hosted by UT Permian Basin. The leadership of the Permian Basin and West Texas law enforcement community including Texas DPS, Texas Rangers, Ector County ISD, UTPB Police and Texas Corrections Facilites and prison systems were invited to the meeting.

The purpose of the annual meeting is for local law enforcement to talk about issues that are affecting them and brainstorm ideas to find solutions to those issues so that Criminal Justice Students at UTPB have a better understanding during their studies.

Several issues discussed that are affecting local law enforcement are keeping officers and personnel, border problems and the increase of drug trafficking.

The new high tech Training Facility at the Odessa Police Department has helped OPD with acquiring new recruits and continued training of veteran officers. The Odessa Police Training Facility has attracted officers from around the county for their continued law enforcement education and training.

Dr. John Fisher, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at UT Permian Basin, suggested that a law enforcement officer with a degree will help with advancement within the law enforcement agency.

Grammy Award Winner Larry Gatlin Guest Educator at UTPB Inspires Students in Music, Art & Poetry

Odessa, Texas/March 24, 2023-UT Permian Basin recently hosted Grammy Award winner Larry Gatlin and his students. Students participated in a 5-week, three-hour class sessions with instruction by Larry Gatlin creating music, art and poetry. The finale of the 5-week classes featured a recital at the Student Activity Center.

There is a possibility that Larry Gatlin will return to UT Permian Basin to teach another session, with concepts inspired by writers like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitsgerald and other classic authors.
