LULAC & Hispanic Heritage of Odessa-“Breakfast With A Champion” Honoring Police Chief Michael Gerke

Odessa, Texas/August 25, 2024-Hispanic Heritage of Odessa, LULAC and members of the Black Cultural Council of Odessa along with guests and Odessa City Council members celebrated “Breakfast With A Champion” honoring Police Chief Michael Gerke.

Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke presented a discussion of the threat of Fentanyl in Odessa and in Ector County and the laws that have been created by the Texas State Legislature to punish those that distribute and cause the death of someone knowingly or unknowingly ingesting Fentanyl.

Other topics included the increasing problems with traffic and motorists not following or obeying traffic laws.

NTSB and the FAA Investigating a Plane Crash in North Odessa Near Schlemeyer Airfield

Odessa, Texas/August 20, 2024-On Tuesday, August 20th at approximately 7am Odessa Fire Rescue responded to a major fire within the 6800 block Alderfer Ave. A small plane that took off from Schlemeyer Field was flying southbound at a low altitude over Yukon Rd., hit power lines on Yukon Rd., and also hitting and damaging a business also on Yukon Rd. The plane went down in the ally in the area of Alderfer Ave and Stevens Ave. Several trailer homes were fully engulfed. OFR rescued a female from a burning trailer home and was transported to a local hospital. 

The aircraft, a 1991 Cessna 550 piloted by Joseph Vincent Summa, a 48 years of age male of Bellaire, Texas. The passenger identified as Joleen Cavaretta Weatherly, a 49 years of age female of Orange, Texas were both pronounced deceased at the scene. The NTSB and the FAA were notified and have begun their investigation. More information as it becomes available.

Odessa Police Department’s Odessa Police Academy XXVII Firearms Training

Odessa, Texas/July 11, 2024-The Odessa Police Department held its Odessa Police Academy 27 firearms training at the OPD shooting range. Recruits along with a Fire Marshal learned the fundamentals of using various types of weapons from an automatic pistol, revolver and rifle. Recruits learned the technique of shooting performing a crawl, walk and run scenario.

Most of the recruits have fired a weapon prior to joining the Odessa Police Academy. Firearm instructors have to corrected bad habits that new recruits have learned over time.

Alejandro Alvarado, a OPA 27 Recruit was born and was being raised in El Paso, Texas. He came to Odessa at the age of 13 and is a graduate of Permian High School. His dream to be in law enforcement started at the age of 3.

OPA 27 Recruits are now heading towards the end of this academy and soon be preparing for graduation.

Odessa Police Department’s 5th Annual Back to School Bash and Backpack Giveaway

Odessa, Texas/August 5, 2024-The Odessa Police Department held their 5th Annual Back to School Bash at Sherwood Park hundreds of people came to the free family event. 500 backpacks filled with school supplies were handed out as well as raffle items for school-age kids.

Parents with their children were able to get free hot dogs, chips and drinks. City departments provided guests with goodie bags and giveaways.

The Odessa Police Department and 1st Responders are having the annual Back to School Block Party this Saturday, August 3rd, at Sherwood Park from 10am to 2pm. Visitors to the event will enjoy food, drinks and games.
